Why FG wants ASUU strike to continue

President Goodluck Jonathan and ASUU Chairman, Dr. Isa Faggae
Nigerian universities have been buffeted with agonising months of strikes for over a decade and until now, the story is pretty much the same. Government is still unwilling to give the education sector a shot in the arm.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has been on strike since June 30 and has engaged in a series of dialogue with the Federal Government over 11 times, albeit, inconclusively. This underscores the lukewarm posture of government towards the striking lecturers and from ASUU’s body language and utterances, it has made it abundantly clear to anyone who cares to listen that it is ready to continue the strike even if it takes years, insisting that its decision was adequately taken in a bid to revitalise Nigerian universities.

PDP crisis: Baraje, Tukur camps clash in Senate

Baraje and Tukur
Barely a week after a similar clash at the House of Representatives, supporters of the main Peoples Democratic Party and those of the Kawu Baraje-led faction of the party clashed again at the Senate on Wednesday.
A timely intervention by Senate President, David Mark however saved a crisis situation on the floor of the senate when members were making their contributions on a motion on the demise of late former Ondo State governor, Dr. Olusegun Agagu.
Trouble started when a former governor of Gombe State, Danjuma Goje, representing Gombe Central Senatorial district, while extolling Agagu’s virtues, described himself as a member of the New PDP with Alhaji Kawu Baraje as the National Chairman.

Mike Ozekhome
There were indications on Wednesday that a major financier of a  kidnapping ring in Edo and other surrounding states, Kelvin Oburuvbe might have been arrested by men of the Department of State Security.
It was reliably gathered that the kidnap kingpin was picked up in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, by operatives of DSS and is currently being interrogated.
There were however conflicting reports that the arrested kidnapper might be the one who recently issued a 60-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to declare amnesty for him and his gang, otherwise his group would blow up oil installations in Urobo speaking areas of the country.

A video believed to have been released by the wanted leader of  the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunnah Lidda’awati Wal Jihad, also known as Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, surfaced in Maiduguri on Wednesday.

P Square, Davido others battle at Channel O awards

Davido
The likes of Davido, Kcee, P Square, Tiwa Savage and Wizkid are set to battle it out with other African artistes as the nominees for the 10th edition of Channel O Music Video Awards were revealed earlier in the week.
Last year, some Nigerians, including D’banj, won big at the award and it might not be a surprise if the artistes pull it off again this year.
Nigerian artistes got 20 nominations in different categories including Most Gifted Duo and Most Gifted Male Video category.
To celebrate a decade of recognising the best African contemporary music talent, the 10th Annual Channel O Africa Music Awards has expanded the prestigious Most Gifted Video of the Year category to 12 nominees, increasing the pressure on nominees in the most fiercely fought category at the awards.
The category again reveals the mix of newcomers and established artistes at this year’s event – a signal of the growing maturity of Africa’s music scene.
Nigeria’s Wizkid, Ice Prince and P Square made that category alongside other African artistes.
The event is scheduled to hold in South Africa on November 30.

PDP crisis: Jonathan will only accept reasonable terms –Presidency

Jonathan
The Presidency has said that though  President Goodluck Jonathan  is committed to timely resolution of the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party, he will not accept unreasonable terms.
The Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak, said this in an interview with one of our correspondents while explaining the President’s stand on the formation of a faction of the PDP by seven governors and some chieftains of the party at the party’s mini convention in Abuja last Saturday.
Gulak also told the aggrieved governors to concentrate on governance and stop overheating the polity.
The presidential aide explained that Jonathan was in support of various reconciliatory efforts by the leadership of the party. He, however, said the President would only accept “reasonable terms” in the efforts to reconcile with a faction of the party called, New PDP.
Gulak said that conditions such as the governors’ call on the President to stop the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission from probing them was ridiculous and unheard of, saying the President would not accept such.

Corporal shoots ASP dead during argument at station

Olusoji
When on April 6, 2013, Jane and Olusoji Elegbede got married in Lagos State, their joy knew no bounds.
Although Olusoji was a policeman serving in Yobe State, which is fraught with security challenges, Jane did not mind living there with him.
Their plan was to settle down, have children and grow old together.
Unfortunately, this was not to be as Olusoji, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, was gunned down by a police corporal  in Gashua Bade Local Government, Yobe State, while on duty less than five months after their wedding.
Olusoji’s widow, who spoke while fighting back tears, told PUNCH Metro that she was still in shock over the incident.
Narrating what led to her 39-year-old husband’s killing, Jane said her husband, who was the Administration Officer at Gashua Police Division, was killed by a 53-year-old corporal, Andrew Bitus.
She said, “The station is situated in a barracks and we all live in the barracks. The corporal (Bitus), was dating an elderly woman and they had a quarrel. Bitus wanted to part ways with the woman, so he told her to refund the money he had spent on her but the woman refused.

ASUU strike becoming political —Suswam

BY PETER DURU
MAKURDI—Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State has said the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, is becoming a political action other than an agitation for the welfare of university lecturers.
Suswam, who spoke yesterday, when he played host to the leadership of the National Union of Benue Students, NUBES, insisted that the leadership of ASUU was not being realistic with its demands.
Gov Suswam
Gov Suswam
According to him, “ASUU has no business continuing with this strike because the Federal Government has met virtually all of their demands. There is nothing in the list of their demands that government has not touched.
The Federal government has released N100 billion to upgrade infrastructures in the universities and that money has been distributed among all the universities in the country and most of them have commenced their procurement process. While the sum of N30 billion has also been released to take care of the Earned Allowances of lecturers  in federal universities, pending the verification of the number of those that are entitled to it.”

Fame has favoured me in so many way – Doris Simoen

*Doris
Beautiful Nollywood actress,  Doris Simeon isn’t a scandal-     prone person but the issue of separation between her and her former husband,  actor and director, Daniel Ademinokan got her name dragged around in a mesh-work of gossips and rumours that hasn’t really panned out.
She was chatted up by Juliet Ebirim at a recent event and here is the conversation that ensued. Excerpts: Tell us about yourself? My name is Doris Simeon. I’m from Edo State, Igbila to be precise. I’m from a family of five, though I am an orphan now.
What was growing up like for you?
It was really fun for me. Those days when my mum sent me on an errand and I didn’t it deliver well, she would flog me and I would wonder “Are you sure this is my mother? But now when I think back, I realise she was only trying to make me a better person.
Especially, when I do the same to my son. It dawned on me that all those scolding was out of love.  It was really fun. I grew up in a face me, I face you kind of house where you have lots of drama. When I think about it, I laugh a lot. Funny enough,  I used to tell the “Aje-butter” children that they didn’t have as much experience about life as those of us who lived in the ghettos.
*Doris
What’s your take on actresses who sleep their way through for roles?
It’s their choice, they weren’t forced into it. They wanted to, that’s why they did it, or probably because they are desperate.
Have you been sexually harassed since you started acting?
I’ve not since I started acting. I’ve had the experience of people or producers toasting me and as far as I am concerned that is normal. Any man can like any woman. It is not peculiar only to Nollywood, It is either you want it or you don’t want it.
Would you say that fame has robbed you of anything?

Eating celery helps fights off pancreatic cancer

Celery
The vegetable – plus artichokes and herbs such as oregano – is loaded with chemicals that kill the cells

It may be bland but celery packs a powerful punch by fighting off one of the most aggressive types of cancer.
The vegetable – plus artichokes and herbs such as oregano – is loaded with chemicals that kill pancreatic cancer cells, a study found.
Leader Professor Elvira de Mejia said: “If you eat a lot of vegetables throughout your life, you’ll have chronic exposure to bioactive flavonoids, which help reduce the risk of cancer.”
Celery is full of apigenin and luteolin – flavonoids that wipe out the diseased cells.
And in tests they created a fivefold rise in the rate the cancer cells self-destructed.
Professor de Mejia, of the University of Illinois in the USA, said people who already had cancer would not be cured by eating flavonoid-rich foods alone, but added drugs could be developed to boost their effect.
Dr Jodee Johnson, part of the study, said: “The goal is to develop a cure, but prolonging the lives of patients would be a significant development.”
The research, in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, did however warn flavonoids could wipe out the benefits of chemotherapy drugs if used at the same time.
Dr Johnson said: “The trick seemed to be using flavonoids as a pre-treatment.”

The deaths of Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed are being looked at again by police after it was claimed the pair were MURDERED by a British soldier.
The Metropolitan Police said it had recently received new information in relation to the deaths and was "assessing its relevance and credibility".
Scotland Yard said it is "scoping" the information and "assessing its relevance and credibility".
It was understood an allegation was made by the former parents-in-law of a former soldier based on information that the ex-soldier talked about in the past, according to a military source.
It was understood the information was passed to the Metropolitan Police through the Royal Military Police.
A statement issued by Scotland Yard said: "The Metropolitan Police Service is scoping information that has recently been received in relation to the deaths and assessing its relevance and credibility.
"The assessment will be carried out by officers from the specialist crime and operations command.
"This is not a re-investigation and does not come under Operation Paget."
Police said they are not prepared to discuss the matter further, while a royal spokeswoman said there will be no comment on the matter from Prince William or Prince Harry, or from Clarence House.
Diana, Dodi and chauffeur Henri Paul died after their Mercedes crashed in the tunnel, which left the Ritz Hotel on the morning of August 31 1997.
The hearing into the deaths of Diana and Dodi lasted more than 90 days with evidence from around 250 witnesses.
The inquests concluded on April 7 2008, with a jury returning a verdict that the "People's Princess" and her boyfriend were unlawfully killed.
After the hearing, Metropolitan Police said they had spent £8 million on services arising from the inquest and the Operation Paget investigation from 2004 to 2006.
That money includes the cost of the legal team which represented the force's commissioner at the inquest, police protection for the inquest jury and paying for the Paget inquiry, reported to have cost £3.6 million.
Former Met Police Commissioner Lord Stevens's Paget investigation was launched in 2004 at the request of Michael Burgess, the Royal Coroner, who was then overseeing the future Diana inquest.

TB Joshua’s neighbours convert homes to hotels

Many residential buildings in Ikotun-Egbe on the outskirts of Lagos have been converted to hotels and inns because of the presence of the Synagogue of all Nations Church, writes ’NONYE BEN-NWANKWO

Mr. Joseph Sunday, who resides at Egbe in Ikotun Egbe, Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos, last Saturday looked every inch a worried man. The expression on his face showed a man whose inner recesses are preoccupied with worries.

Indeed, the 40-year-old father of five, who our correspondent saw at a property agent’s shop, is having an accommodation problem. His landlord at Bolungberu Street on the Isolo-Ikotun Road, has given him a notice to vacate his house in the next six months. So, Sunday’s anxiety was not only on how to secure another accommodation for his family, but also how to raise the needed money to do so. He also has to meet his landlord’s deadline if his belongings would not be thrown out of the compound.

Securing and paying for accommodation in Lagos is no child’s play. Besides, the huge two or three years’ rent one has to pay to get a fairly good place, other sundry financial bills like the agreement and agent’s fees, among others, are part of the burden one has to bear.

Click for Full Image Size
The legwork, as it were, is another task any potential accommodation seeker has to face. Indeed, anybody looking for an accommodation has to register with agents, which, of course, requires monetary involvement (perhaps between N2,000 and N5,000) in as many shops as possible, although that does not suggest an automatic access to the apartment of one’s choice.

These and many other psychological issues were occupying Sundays mind last Saturday.

Like Sunday, many other residents of Egbe and its environs are facing a similar experience. Small-scale business owners too are not left out of what a resident of the area described as the “mad rush for the occupation” of the territory.

First Lady grounds Abuja with drummers, dancers

Nigeria’s Federal Capital were on Thursday subjected to unwarranted restriction and security cordon, as the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, took time off to sing and dance with women drawn from the 36 states of the Federation.
Abuja-women
The event, which was held at the Eagles Square, effectively cut off workers from the imposing Federal Secretariat on both Shehu Shagari Way and Ibrahim Babangida Road, forcing them to trek for miles to the office.
The big event, which took the workers and residents by surprise, also prevented commercial and government drivers from dropping their passengers, mostly workers in their designated bus stops around the secretariat.
As vehicular and human traffic was effectively cut off from all the routes leading to the venue of the First Lady’s rally, tagged, “Nigerian Women Rally for Peace and Empowerment”, frustrated motorists were funnelled to any available space, thereby leading to a chaotic traffic snarl for most part of the day.

A 29-year-old pastor (name withheld) standing trial for allegedly raping and impregnating his senior pastor’s daughter in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State, has run away to establish his own church

 .
It was gathered that the pastor whose case had just been transferred from the Ekiti State Magistrate Court to the state High Court was granted bail in July after being remanded in detention for about three months due to his inability to meet his initial bail conditions.
The new church, which he started in Ikoyi area of Ikere-Ekiti was said to attract a lot of people, having succeeded in taking away many members of the church where he pulled out.
The girl, Oluwadamilola who until her ordeal was an SS1 student of a high school in Ikere-Ekiti, gave birth to a baby boy on May 26, while the man was still in detention, over the matter.

Damilola’s mother said the father of the young pastor had entered a written agreement with the parents of the girl in March this year, promising that they would take care of the girl and her pregnancy but the alleged lackadaisical attitude of the pastor thereafter compelled the girl’s parents to report the case to the police.
According to sources, the embattled pastor had been organizing revival programmes and crusade, calling members of the public who were not aware of his atrocities to come for miracles.
It was gathered that the middle-aged pastor was married, and this was the reason he hurriedly left the church in September last year when he realized the girl was pregnant and warned her not to let anybody know.

Jonathan, a drowning President –El-Rufai

El-Rufai
A former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, has described President Goodluck Jonathan as a drowning President, who distorts facts.
El-Rufai, in a statement on Wednesday, insisted that Jonathan had resorted to ethnic and religious politics to score some political points.
The President’s spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati, on Sunday described el-Rufai as “a serial liar” while responding to an interview the former minister granted Liberty FM,Kaduna, on Saturday.
El-Rufai, in the interview, said Jonathan was playing religious and ethnic politics.
The former minister, who, on Wednesday, insisted that Jonathan was playing the ethnic game, noted that the Presidency had not addressed issues he raised on Saturday.
He said, “It may interest the President to know that Nigerians are much wiser now and will not be deceived by the antics of a drowning president and his desperate aides.”
